Your home's switchboard is its electrical heart - everything in your home depends on it working safely and reliably. If your switchboard was installed more than 20 years ago, there's a good chance it wasn't designed for the electrical demands of a modern household.

How Do You Know if Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading?

Many homeowners don't think about their switchboard until something goes wrong. Here are the most common signs that an upgrade is overdue:

• Ceramic fuses or rewireable fuses - If your switchboard has old-style ceramic fuses that need rewiring when they blow, it's well past time for an upgrade. These are a fire risk and cannot provide the protection modern circuits require.
• Circuit breakers tripping regularly - If breakers trip frequently, especially when running multiple appliances, your switchboard may be overloaded or have a fault that needs attention.
• No safety switches - Queensland law requires safety switches on all power point and lighting circuits in new installations. Many older homes still lack adequate safety switch protection. If your switchboard has circuit breakers but no safety switches (look for the T button), you are not fully protected.
• No spare circuit capacity - Installing a new air conditioner, EV charger, or solar system all require a dedicated circuit. If your board has no spare slots, an upgrade is needed before any of these can be added.
• Switchboard feels warm or shows scorch marks - This is an urgent warning sign. Switch off the mains and call a licensed electrician immediately.
• Your home is more than 25 years old and hasn't had electrical work done - The electrical load in homes has increased enormously with air conditioning, multiple TVs, home offices, pool pumps, and EV chargers all now common. An older board simply wasn't designed for this.

A switchboard upgrade carried out by JT Electrical typically includes:

• Removal of the old switchboard and components
• Installation of a new consumer mains unit with modern circuit breakers
• Safety switches (RCDs) fitted to all power point and lighting circuits as required by Queensland regulations
• Correct labelling of all circuits
• Testing and verification of all circuits
• Issuing of an Electrical Safety Certificate (Form 9) - the compliance document you need for insurance, property sales, and peace of mind

Depending on the age and condition of your existing installation, a mains upgrade may also be recommended at the same time - replacing the service cable from the street to your meter to ensure it can handle the full capacity of your new board.

Safety Switches vs Circuit Breakers

Many homeowners aren't sure of the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker - and it's an important distinction. Circuit breakers protect your equipment and wiring from overload. Safety switches protect people from electric shock by detecting current leaking to earth and cutting power in as little as 0.03 of a second.

Adding Air Conditioning, EV Charging or Solar? Your Switchboard Comes First

One of the most common reasons homeowners need a switchboard upgrade is when they're adding a new system that requires its own dedicated circuit - most often:

• A new split system or ducted air conditioner
• A Tesla or EV Wall Connector
• A solar inverter connection
• A pool or spa pump
• A backup generator connection

Switchboard Compliance in Queensland

Queensland electrical regulations require safety switches on all power point and lighting circuits in new installations and when upgrades are carried out. When you sell or purchase a property, the presence or absence of safety switch protection must be declared on the standard contract and Form 24 property transfer.
