Here's a practical guide to public EV charging in South East Queensland - the networks available, what it costs, how long it takes, and why most experienced EV owners still prefer to charge at home.

The Public Charging Network in South East Queensland

Public charging in Queensland has expanded significantly over the last few years. Australia now has over 5,800 public charging locations including more than 900 DC fast charger sites nationwide, and South East Queensland is one of the best-served regions in the country.

Chargefox

One of Australia's largest networks, with fast chargers at shopping centres, service stations, and highway locations across SEQ. A Chargefox subscription at $12.99 per month reduces rapid charging rates by approximately 15%, which makes sense if you use public chargers regularly.

Evie Networks

A growing network focused on high-traffic corridors and premium locations. Evie pricing runs in the $0.45–$0.60 per kWh range and the network is well regarded for reliability and a well-designed app.

Tesla Superchargers

Tesla Superchargers are now open to non-Tesla vehicles at most Australian locations through the Tesla app. Tesla V3 and V4 Superchargers deliver 150–250kW, providing approximately 250km of range in just 20 minutes - the closest thing to a fuel stop an EV offers.

JOLT

Worth knowing about for local top-ups. JOLT provides free EV charging at selected Brisbane locations, with each session providing 7 kWh free - enough for approximately 40–45 km of range. The chargers are slower AC units but the free electricity makes them attractive for topping up while shopping.

Queensland Electric Super Highway

The state government's long-distance charging backbone. The Queensland Electric Super Highway network of 54 fast charging locations is now fully completed, connecting EV drivers across coastal and inland routes. For South East Queensland drivers it's most relevant for longer trips north toward the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, and beyond.

Finding a charging station is straightforward with apps like PlugShare and ABRP, which let EV drivers search by location and find DC fast chargers from all major networks in real time.

What Does Public Charging Actually Cost?

This is where public charging loses its appeal for regular use. Public DC fast chargers typically cost 40–75 cents per kWh - roughly two to three times the cost of charging at home. To put that in real numbers for a typical Gold Coast EV driver:

  • AC destination chargers (7–22kW) - Found at shopping centres, hotels, and some workplaces. Slower but often free or low cost. Expect to add roughly 40–100km of range per hour.
  • DC fast chargers (50–150kW) - The standard public fast charger. Adds 150–400km per hour of charging. A 20–30 minute stop at a 50kW charger might add 100–150km of range.
  • DC ultra-rapid chargers (150–350kW) - Increasingly available at premium locations. Tesla V3 and V4 Superchargers sit in this category, delivering 250km of range in approximately 20 minutes.

The Home Charging Advantage

More than 80% of EV owners do most of their charging at home - and it's easy to understand why. You plug in when you arrive home, wake up to a full charge, and never think about it, at a fraction of the cost of public charging.

The difference between plugging into a standard 10-amp power point and installing a dedicated Wall Connector or home EV charger is significant:

Charging from a Standard Power Point is Allowed - but a standard outlet adds only 10–15km of range per hour.

A Dedicated 7kW Wall Connector adds approximately 50km per hour - most Gold Coast drivers wake up to a full battery every morning.

Combined with Solar Panels - schedule charging during daylight hours and you're effectively fuelling your car from energy your own roof generates.
